Dear Diary,
Not a day goes by that I don’t wonder what Earth is like.
My mom and dad always talk about how beautiful it was before the Thousand Day Storm. They say it was lush and green, with so much water. It was blue! Blue water! What kind of madness is that? They talked about the ocean, and fish, cats and dogs.
Sure, we have a swimming pool here, but I wonder what it was like to swim in salty water. Did you know the ocean was salty? Me neither. That’s weird, isn’t it?
We are on route to a planet called Samurana. They say it's called that because it was first seen by a Samurai astronomer. Its colors are beautiful. I hope this is the one, but I’ve been hoping that about every planet for eleven years. My parents have been hoping for sixteen years.
My ninth birthday is approaching. My mom and dad talk about how kids on Earth would be spoiled with so many toys and presents on their birthdays. They didn’t know how lucky they were.
I hope I get a chocolate cake this year. If we finally complete our mission and find a new place for humans to live, maybe I'll finally get to meet my brother.
He had to be left behind on Earth. My parents often get so sad about it. I can’t wait to see the look on his face when he finds out he has a little sister.
Tomorrow is the first day of the school year. I am excited but nervous. Dad says there are about 20,000 people on the ship. I think there are about 4,000 children in The Nebula’s schools. The bigger school is for the children of passengers: the settlers, as we call them. I’m at the school for the children of the Nebula staff and crew.
My parents told me that before the Thousand Day Storm, kids sometimes went on multi-night trips to farms, and even other countries, though they never went on one; my parents were born in the bunkers. What I would give for a trip off this ship!
But I cannot imagine my school being able to corral all of us on a trip like that! The teachers would go insane! How would Mrs. Bard react if she had to manage us all in the wild! I hope I have Mrs. Bard as my teacher again this year, but I wouldn’t mind Mr. Skye.
Well, my parents have invited me to dinner with the captain. THE CAPTAIN! I wonder what he’s like. Honestly, I haven’t heard great things, but he’s practically God on this ship. I need to go. See you, diary.
Makayla out.
